Chapter III-1. Collection/Specimen Display: In General

(version 1.5)

The Collection/Specimen display is the main presentation of collection and specimen data in Atrium. It results from the browsing features of the Digital Herbarium and the "Quick link to a family" search on the Atrium banner. Information about individual taxa may be available, and the collections and specimen in Atrium that have been identified to a particular taxon. The Collection/Specimen display has many ways of presenting the collection data and options for printing or formating the information to use with other systems. Each tab of the display is treated in a chapter below. This chapter describes the Collection/Specimen display and the controls on it in more general terms.

Collection/Specimen Display: General Plan

Below the Digital Herbarium navigation bar, and moving down, this display consists of:

  1. The taxa trail: This small area presents the taxonomic levels traversed to reach this entity if the display results from Browse by Taxonomy actions. Click on any name in the taxa trail to change the display to the same tab for the name clicked. However, this list of taxon names can only be used to move up the taxonomic structure. See 1. Taxa Trail below.

  2. The Collection/Specimen Display tabs: These tabs divide the information available for the entity displayed into logical units. Some tabs display information for the current entity, like a family or collector, and some display information for related entities, like the collections identified to the family or made by the collector. See 2. Collection/Specimen tabs below for a discussion of the data on each tab.

  3. The entity title: This title identifies the entity to which the information displayed belongs. This may be a collector, project, research site, habit or habitat, or the taxon level and name. For genus and species, the family, genus and specific epithet, with authorities, are displayed. For examples of these titles, see 3. Entity Title below.

  4. Main data display: This area changes depending on the tab selected. See 4. Data Display Area below.

  5. Output options: The possible output formats for each data tab are displayed here. These options vary depending on the tab selected, whether the user is logged in, and user permissions. See 5. Output Options below.

  6. Copyright and Terms of Use: This area displays the Atrium copyright information. Click "Terms of Use" to open a new window with the details of the terms of use for Atrium. See 6. Copyright and Terms of Use below.

1. Taxa Trail.

The taxa trail shows where you are in the taxonomic structure of kingdom, division, order, class, sub-class, family, genus, specific epithet. Click the name of the level in the taxonomic structure to move to, and the display changes to that entity, but stays on the same tab. If the current display was reached by some method besides Browse by Taxonomy, this line is empty.

Click here to return to the Browsing by Taxonomy Procedure.

2. Collection/Specimen tabs.

The Content Tabs: these break up the information for the taxonomic entity into manageable parts. The Summary tab shows the volume of collections and taxonomic entires at lower levels and allows you to move lower in the taxonomic structure. The Detail tab shows botanical information for the taxonomic entity identified in the title. The References tab displays any literature in the system which refers to the displayed entity. The Collections tab contains the Collection List with all the collections identified to the taxonomic entity through the family/genus/specific epithet determination of the specimen. The Images tab displays thumbnails of all the images tied to the collections identified to the taxonomic entity displayed. The Map View tab places all collections with latitude and longitude data on a combined map/satellite image of the geographic area in which they were collected.

3. Entity Title. When browsing by taxonomy, the title of the Collection/Specimen display changes to show the taxonomic level and name for the display. The examples below come from the same example as the taxa trail above.

When browsing by collector, the title of the Collection/Specimen display changes to show the collector selected. For example:

When browsing by project, the title of the Collection/Specimen display changes to show the project selected. For example:

When browsing by research site, the title of the Collection/Specimen display changes to show the research site selected. For example:

When browsing by habit, the title of the Collection/Specimen display changes to show the habit selected. For example:

When browsing by habitat, the title of the Collection/Specimen display changes to show the habitat selected. For example:

4. Data Display Area. This is the area where the information for the titled entity is displayed. It is different on each tab. Details for each tab are included in the discussion in the chapters below:

Chapter III-6, Collection/Specimen Display: Summary tab

Chapter III-8, Collection/Specimen Display: References tab

Chapter III-9, Collection/Specimen Display: Collections tab

Chapter III-10, Collection/Specimen Display: Images tab

5. Output Options. The export, download and print options are different on each tab. The formats of the file output are explained in Chapter III-17, Export Files. Print output is discussed in Chapter III-16, Print Output. The download process is explained in detail in the chapter related to the specific tab where the export feature is located.
