Chapter II-3. Browsing the Taxonomic Structure

(version 1.5)

In General: "Browse by" is the first choice on the Digital Herbarium navigation bar, and "Taxonomy" is the first option under it. The Digital Herbarium Browse by Taxonomy feature opens at the Kingdom level, with statistics about how many collections and entities occur at the next lower level of the taxonomic structure. The taxonomic structure is as defined by convention within botany, and collections are identified to upper levels through the family assigned the collection when the family, genus and specific epithet is determined.

As you continue to move down the taxonomic structure, the title at the upper left of the display area identifies the taxonomic level and specific entity to which the data below pertains.

Click any name in the list on the Summary tab to move to the Summary tab of the Collection/Specimen display for that entity. Thus you can move from division to class, class to sub-class, etc. For more information about the Summary tab and how to use it, see Chapter III-6, Collection/Specimen Display: Summary tab

At any level, to see more detailed information about the entity identified in the title, click the Detail tab of the Collection/Specimen display. This tab displays any information available in Atrium about the entity named. The detail data displayed is provided by Atrium users and you are encouraged to add what you know. For more information about the Detail tab, see Chapter III-7, Collection/Specimen Display: Detail tab

The Collections tab of the Collection/Specimen displays a list of the collections identified to the entity identified in the title, and the Images tab shows the thumbnail images for the collections on the Collections tab. For more information about the contents of these tabs, see Chapter III-9, Collection/Specimen Display: Collections tab and Chapter III-10, Collection/Specimen Display: Images tab.

Procedure:

  1. Select

    Browse byTaxonomy

from the Digital Herbarium navigation bar.

  2. On the list of Kingdoms, click the one desired. If divisions are also available, you may choose one of these and skip the kingdom level. For information on why you see Kingdoms and Divisions, or only Kingdoms, in the list, see Control: Display One or Two Levels for clarification.

  3. On the Summary tab of the taxonomic entity chosen, select your choice of the taxonomic entities listed.

  4. Continue until you arrive at the entity desired.

Note

You can move up the taxonomic structure using the list of names just above the tabs when browsing by taxonomy. This list of names is called the taxa trail and is provided to allow you to move up and retry other branches of the taxonomic structure. For more information about this feature, see Taxa Trail.

The statistics after the taxon name indicate how many collections it contains, as well as the number of lower level taxa. At the bottom of the list there is an indicator of how many empty taxa are not listed and a "Show empty taxa" control to show them. Empty taxa are those to which a collection in Atrium has not been determined. Click "Show empty taxa" to include the empty taxa in the list or "Hide empty taxa" to leave them out of the list. However this control is set, it stays in effect until you toggle it to the other option. The setting for this control is saved for your next session in your Preferences if you have an id and are logged in.

At any point in the taxonomic structure, you may click the Collections tab to see the collections for the taxon, sort the Collection List by family, genus or specific epithet, and map the collections on the Map View tab. You can also download the collection information for use elsewhere. See Chapter III-9, Collection/Specimen Display: Collections tab for more information about the features of the Collections tab. See Chapter III-11, Collection/Specimen Display: Map View tab for more information about the features of the Map View tab.
