Chapter III-11. Collection/Specimen Display: Map View tab

(version 1.5)

The Map View tab maps points for collections based on latitude and longitude. Only the collections in the Collection List below the map that have a latitude and longitude are mapped. The same paging and sorting options are provided for this Collection List as are available for the Collection List on the Collections tab. The map has controls to move in any direction and to zoom in and out.

The map is a combination of satellite imagery to show the ground contours and regular cartography to provide roads and other landmarks.

The buttons in the upper right allow you to change the display to map or satellite alone. The default is both, which gives the best representation of the landscape.

Controls: Map Movement, Zoom

The scrolling buttons (arrows to move north, east, south or west) in the upper left allow you to scroll in the cardinal directions or zoom in (plus sign) and zoom out (minus sign). You can move more efficiently by placing the cursor over the map. It changes to a hand. Holding the right mouse button down "grabs" the point under the cursor and the display moves with the cursor in any direction. When you get to the edge of the map, release the mouse button, grab the other edge and move on. Once you go outside the bounds of the map, the cursor reverts to the usual pointer and the map movement ceases.

Besides using the zoom in (plus sign) and zoom out (minus sign) buttons, a double-click with the left mouse button will zoom in and a double-click with the right mouse button will zoom out.

The scale for the map is identified in the lower left, with the Google trademarks and Terms for Use across the bottom of the map.

Each collection is placed on the map with a pink pointy balloon. Right click the balloon to open a hover window with the name of the collection and the first thumbnail image for it. Click the name to go to the Collection Data tab of the Collection Detail display with all the information for the collection. You must click the close button in the upper right corner to close the hover window with the image.

Figure III-11.6. Collection List

Collection List

The Collection List on the Map View tab has the same collections as the Collection List on the Collections tab and Images tab of the Collection/Specimen display, and in the same order. This table shows the collector's name and collection number, the determination, and the latitude and longitude used to place the collection point on the map. Those collections listed with a zero in the latitude and longitude are not represented on the map. Click the underlined column title for collector's name, collection number, family, genus or specific epithet to sort the Collection List. Click once for ascending order and a second time for descending order.

Control: Export, Print. Click one of the export options below the Collection List to export the collection information or print herbarium labels for the collections in the Collection List.

See Chapter III-17, Export Files for more information about the files that are created using these options. See Chapter III-16, Print Output for more information about the labels that are created using the "Print Labels" options.
