Vegetative Morphology

Habit: Shrub or small tree to ca. 3 m tall.

Main axis: Bark strong, fibrous.

Branch: Stems smooth, brown to black.

Leaves: Leaves simple, alternate, nearly sessile; the petioles short, to ca. 5 mm long, black when dry; the lamina elliptic to ovate-elliptic, ca. 6 x 16 cm, olive-gray to green-gray when dry, chartaceous, glabrous, the base acute, the apex acute to short-acuminate, the margins entire; the secondary venation weakly to strongly brochidodromous, the secondary veins same color as leaf.

Reproductive Morphology

Inflorescence: Inflorescence ramiflorous or axillary.

Flowers: Flowers 1 per inflorescence, short-pedicillate, subtended by two bracts; the sepals imbricate, green; the petals imbricate, variable in length, yellow, thin with rather hyaline margins when mature.

Fruit: Fruit apocarpous; the monocarps ca. 10, free, ellipsoid, to ca. 3 cm long, purple to purple-black when mature, glabrous, red when mature.

Seeds: Seeds 1 per monocarp, orange to orange-red, furrowed longitudinally.
