Vegetative Morphology
Habit: Trees to 28 m.
Leaves: Distinct from other genera on the basis of much thicker leaves with weaker venation.
Exudate: Some species exude red resin from the trunk.
Reproductive Morphology
Fruit: Fruit apocarpous, with only one carpel, to 6 cm long, deeply red or approaching black when mature, the mesocarp yellow, very aromatic.
Seeds: Seeds 1-4 per carpel, with ruminate endosperm.
