Habit: Herbs and shrubs, rarely lianas or trees to 20 m.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, entire or weakly dentate, sessile or short-petiolate, with pinnate venation.

Reproductive Morphology

Fruit: Fruit an achene, brown when mature. Pappus bristles white. Some species pubescent throughout.

Infructescence: Infructescence axillary or terminal. Bracts to 0.6 cm.

Distribution: Temperate and tropical regions of the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

Notes: Frequently in areas of full sun, such as at the margin of rivers and forests, and in forest gaps.
