Diagnosis: This species can be recognized by: long, narrowly lanceolate leaves with strong spines along the margin; widely expanded leaf bases sheathing the basal stem; tightly spicate inflorescence held at base of leaves on reduced peduncle; and greenish inflorescence bracts.
