Morphological Description

Diagnosis: Epiphytic herbs. Leaves lanceolate, to 1 m long, the margins with spines. Inflorescence a spike with colorful bracts. Flowers purple to bluish subtended by green, inferior ovary. Infructescence to 1 m long. Fruit a berry, sessile, to 2.5 cm long, gray-white when mature, striate, the calyx and stigma persistent. Seeds numerous per fruit, embedded in a sticky mesocarp. Distribution: From Costa Rica and Panama to Peru.
