Vegetative Morphology

Habit: Palms to 15 m tall. Clustered.

Main axis: Roots short, spinose.

Leaves: Leaves pinnate, the pinnae asymmetrically divided into various segments. The rachis to 3 m long.

Reproductive Morphology

Fruit: Fruit conical, of different shapes and sizes, with brownish, tannish pubescence.

Infructescence: Infructescence brown, to 30 cm long, the fruits tightly aggregated forming a very compact structure.

Seeds: Seed one per fruit.

Other

Uses: The trunks are parted in thin boards and used in construction. The leaves are used as thatch.

Distribution: Panama to Bolivia, to 800 m in elevation.
