Chapter III-14. Field Guide

(version 1.5)

Field Guide: The Field Guide feature of Atrium is intended to create a printout usable in the field showing specimens and collections already represented in Atrium. The field guide is generated in PDF format to allow it to be printed as pages. The images for the collections in Atrium are included, and the identification information can be included in two formats, the species data or the collection data. Laminating the printed field guide makes it more impervious to climate in the field.

The Field Guide is generated from two places in Atrium. One is the Images tab of the Collection/Specimen display. The images seen on the Images tab are the ones included in the Field Guide. The one other place in Atrium where a field guide can be created is from a workspace. See Chapter IV-9, Output From a Workspace for information on creating a field guide from a workspace.

  1. On the Images tab of the Collection/Specimen display or Workspace display, click "Print Field Guide."

The Generate Field Guide panel opens.

  2. Select the resolution for the images. Set the resolution to low to for a data set about half the size of the one created at high resolution. The field guide also prints more quickly at low resolution, but perhaps at the loss of details. High resolution may show more details in the images, but it also increases the size of the data set and slows the print of the field guide.

  3. Type a title for the field guide. Whatever you type is centered in one line on the top of each page. Do not make the text longer than 90 characters or it runs off both sides of the page.

If you do not provide your own title, the title defaults to:

  4. Select the format you want for the images and information.

The Images Only format places the images in two columns with only family, genus and specific epithet identification. The Species Data format provides each image on the left and, in the right column, the family, genus and specific epithet. The Collection Data format also places the image on the left and, in the right column, includes the following information from the Collection Detail display: the genus and specific epithet, family name, determination, Locality data, Habitat data, collector's name, collection number and date of collection.

  5. Click the "Generate Field Guide" button.

  6. A new window opens with the message:

  7. Click the underlined text. A new window opens with the Adobe Reader running. The lower left corner contains a progress message.

Once the field guide is generated, it is presented in the Adobe Reader. From this window the field guide can be printed or saved to a data set using the File menu of the Adobe Reader window or the using the save or print buttons of the Adobe Reader interface. See the Adobe Reader help file for more information about printing or saving a PDF document.

  8. When ready to return to Atrium, close the window with Adobe Reader and the Field Guide. You are returned to panel where you requested the field guide.

Species Data:

Collection Data:

An acknowledgement of the Atrium Andes to Amazon patrons is printed on the bottom of each page of the Field Guide.

Note

These examples were generated at the low resolution. From these you can decide if you need the higher resolution for your field guide.

Collections without images are not included in the Field Guide.

If there are no images on the Images tab, the resulting field guide, regardless of the format chosen, consists of one page with the title and acknowledgment footer only.
