Vegetative Morphology

Habit: Hemiepiphytic or epiphytic climbers, rarely terrestrial.

Leaves: Leaves cordate, entire, or rarely trilobed to multisegmented, with strong heterophylly. Some species with lanceolate leaves and with very short or winged petioles.

Reproductive Morphology

Inflorescence: Spathe persistent, generally reddish, completely surrounding the spadix.

Fruit: Fruit a berry, cream-yellow, orange, or red when mature.

Infructescence: Infructescence syncarpous.

Seeds: Seeds very small, many per fruit. A few species with one seed per fruit.

Other

Uses: Several species are cultivated as ornamental houseplants.

Distribution: Mexico to Peru.
