Morphological Description

Diagnosis: Small to robust plants in loose or dense tufts, mostly tomentose below, erect, with forked and fastigiate or whorled branching. Leaves ovate-lanceolate to linear- or lanceolate-subulate, acute or acuminate, unbordered, toothed at the margins above and often at the back of the costa; costa single, mostly strong, ending below the apex to excurrent as a toothed awn; cells rounded-quadrate to oblong or linear, papillose at or near 1 or both ends or sometimes centrally, rarely smooth, usually enlarged, lax, smooth and hyaline toward the base, not or only slightly differentiated at the basal angles. Setae terminal, mostly ± elongate; capsules inclined or horizontal, subglobose or ovoid, mostly asymmetric or obliqued-mouthed, generally furrowed; operculum convex or short-conic, rarely rostrate; peristome double, single rudimentary or lacking. Calyptra cucullate, smooth, naked.
