Morphological Description
Diagnosis: Epiphytic or terrestrial herbs. Leaves to 1 m long, green or red, margins with semi-erect spines. Inflorescence a spike or raceme, reduced or often on elongate peduncle, with conspicuous colored bracts. Infructescence 50 cm long, with basal spines to red floral bracts. Fruit a berry, sessile, yellow to bluish when mature, the stigma persistent at apex. Seeds numerous per fruit. Value as ornamental plants. Distribution: Mexico to Argentina and Paraguay.
