Morphological Description

Diagnosis: Plants small to fairly robust, growing in wet places in loose to dense, bright-green or yellowish tufts, ± tomentose below. Stems irregularly branched or frequently with whorled innovations below the inflorescences. Leaves erect, spreading or ± secund when dry, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, acuminate and acute or, rarely, bluntly acute to obtuse, serrulate nearly throughout; costa subpercurrent to excurrent; upper cells oblong to linear, papillose at the upper or lower end (or both), very rarely smooth or centrally papillose. Setae single, straight or flexuose, elongate; capsules strongly inclined to horizontal, asymmetric, subglobose, short-necked and ribbed; operculum convex-conic; exostome teeth densely and finely papillose, trabeculate; endostome with a well-developed basal membrane, keeled, vertically papillose-striate segments, and rudimentary to rather well developed. Spores reniform, densely papillose.
