Habit: Lianas or climbing herbs to 2 m tall.

Main axis: Stems square (quadrangled).

Leaves: Leaves opposite, sometimes asperous, margin entire or serrate. Venation trinerved or pinnately nerved. Pubescence short or “rala” on the leaf.

Reproductive Morphology

Fruit: Fruit an achene, black when mature.

Infructescence: Infructescence terminal or axillary with orange bracts.

Distribution: Panama to Paraguay.

Notes: Plant very aromatic, common in secondary forest.
