Vegetative Morphology
Habit: Palms with short stems or to 8 m tall, or sometimes acaulescent.
Main axis: The stems with characteristic rings originating from points of leaf attachment. Solitary or clustered.
Leaves: Leaves entire or pinnate, the apex entire or bifid. Rachis to 2 m long.
Reproductive Morphology
Fruit: Fruit sessile, black, and round or elongated.
Infructescence: Infructescence 70 cm, spicate or paniculate/branched. The peduncle and the infructescence branches green, orange, or red. Calyx persistent.
Seeds: Seed one per fruit.
Other
Uses: The leaves of some species are used as thatch.
Distribution: Mexico and the Guianas to Bolivia, to 1200 m in elevation.
