Habit: Lianas in the study region, also small trees and shrubs.
Branch: Stems of lianas thick with concentric rings or bands of vascular tissue visible in cross section.
Leaves: Leaves simple, alternate; lamina often scabrous, the margins entire or serrate.
Stipules: Stipules, when present, caducous or somewhat wing-like and adnate to the petiole.
Reproductive Morphology
Inflorescence: Inflorescence axillary, ramiflorous, or terminal, paniculate, cymose, or sometimes in fascicles.
Flowers: Flowers usually bisexual, sometimes unisexual; sepals mostly 2-7-merous, usually imbricate; petals usually 3-7, imbricate, caducous, white or yellow; stamens numerous, free, persistent on the fruit; ovary superior, the carpels 1-20, sometimes free along one side, placentation parietal or basal.
Fruit: Fruit a dry, dehiscent follicle, capsule, or berry, sometimes surrounded by persistent sepals.
Seeds: Seeds 1-2 to several per fruit, often arillate.
