Vegetative Morphology
Habit: Small tree to 5 m tall.
Main axis: Bark strong, fibrous.
Branch: Stems brown when mature, smooth.
Leaves: Leaves simple, alternate; the petioles weakly canaliculate, stout, swollen below, to ca. 5 mm long, black when dry, brown pubescent to glabrescent when young; the lamina elliptic to elliptic-oblong, to ca. 7 x 23 cm, light brown to olive-brown when dry, somewhat glacous below when fresh, rather coriaceous, the base acute to decurrent and sometimes folded in below at petiole apex, the apex acute to short-acuminate, the margins entire; secondary venation eucamptodromous to weakly brochidodromous, the tertiary veins conspicuous, strong, parallel, perpindicular to the secondary veins.
Reproductive Morphology
Inflorescence: Inflorescence solitary, axillary or ramiflorous.
Flowers: Flowers 1 per inflorescence, pedicillate; sepals small, caducous leaving a persistent, circular base; petals obovate, to 2 cm long, green, thick, waxy, glabrescent to sericeous especially on outer surface.
Fruit: Fruit apocarpous consisting of numerous monocarps; the monocarps ellipsoid to oblong, to ca. 1.2 cm long, purple-black when mature, smooth, glabrous, stipitate at base, the stipe to 1.5 cm, red when mature.
Seeds: Seeds one per monocarp.
