Chapter I-3. Desktop Requirements and Settings

(version 1.5)

General Requirements: Atrium has been tested with Internet Explorer and Firefox from Mozilla. You should have the latest version, or a least a very recent version. As of version 1.5 of Atrium, Internet Explorer is on version 7.0 and Firefox is on version 2.0. Whichever browser you use, it must be set to run Javascript and allow cookies. Directions for setting these options follow. For more detailed information about browser settings, seeAppendix C.

You must also have Adobe Flash Player ActiveX loaded on your PC. Instructions for getting this application follow.

Set Firefox to Run JavaScript: On the Firefox "Tools" menu, select "Options". On the "Content" tab, enable (click on) "Enable JavaScript".

Set Firefox to Allow Cookies: On the Firefox "Tools" menu, select "Options". Click the "Privacy" icon in the top bar, and in the "Cookies" section, turn "Accept cookies from sites" ON. Also, setting the "Keep until:" attribute to "they expire" provides faster response from the application at the beginning of a session. If you click the "Show Cookies" button, Atrium shows up in the list as "atrium.andesamazon.org".

Set Internet Explorer to Run JavaScript: Select "Tools" from the Internet Explorer menu, then "Internet Options". On the "Advanced" tab, scroll down the "Settings" list to the "Java (Sun)" section. Enable (click on) "Use JRE 1.6.0 for applet".

Set Internet Explorer to Allow Cookies: Select "Tools" from the Internet Explorer menu, then "Internet Options". On the "Privacy" tab, the Settings slide must be set to allow cookies. The "Medium" setting is sufficient to allow Atrium to work.

Adding Adobe Flash To Your PC: To find out if you already have the Flash Player ActiveX, check the list of installed programs on your computer. As of July 2007, Adobe Flash Player is on version 9. You may have a version listed as Macromedia Flash version 8. This is the same application and you may not need to upgrade. If you do not have it, or think you might need a more recent version, follow these steps to download and install it:

  1. Open your Internet browser.

  2. Type "flash" in the search field.

  3. Press the Enter key or click the search button to begin the search.

  4. In the list of search results, find "Adobe Flash Player Download Center." Click it.

  5. Read and agree to the Terms of Service.

  6. Read and follow the installation instructions.
