Morphological Description

Diagnosis: Herbs and vines, one species a shrub. Leaves more or less succulent, weakly serrate, very thin and almost transparent when dry. Infructescence terminal. Fruit a capsule, to 3 cm, brown when mature, with three wings, one elongated and two reduced, reticulately nerved and somewhat translucent. Seeds small, many per fruit. Distribution: Mexico to Peru and Bolivia, but more speciose in the Old World tropics.
